Germany and Belgium tips?

By strutnakid. Filed in Discussion  |

Hi All,

i will be in Germany and Belgium in March and am looking for tips on not to miss places (breweries, bottle shops and bars). ill be travelling from Frankfurt to Brussels and back to Frankfurt via Paris. ill have a vehicle and maybe a small trailor so ill be free to buy a ton of beer and store it at a friends and have him ship it to me bit by bit.  i will most likely be free to travel throughout Belgium and will also hit Berlin (who makes the best Berliner Weisse?) or Munich, possibly both.

Id appreciate any recommendations you guys have. especially for bottle shops where i might pick up some hard to find or aged lambics. we will see Cantillon for sure and if anyones been there im wondering about there gift shop. what the prices are like for beer and souvenirs and if they only take cash, etc. Ive got the newest “Good beer guide Belgium” but would love anyones first hand info too.

Thanks,

John Soens

    Hey John,

My wife and I went three years ago…we flew into Munich, took trains around Belgium, then came back to Munich and hit Bamberg and Kloster Andechs. Cantillon is cool and I believe it was only cash, we bought a bottle and some nice glasses but i don’t remember the prices. The dollar really sucks against the euro anyway so everything is a bit pricey.

We also used the Good Beer Guide and it is very helpful, I believe it lists some bottle shops. As for bars we went to Delirium which is crowded and noisy but a great beer selection. There are also some gueuze and faro bars listed in the book that we hit but again I don’t remember the names, I will look when I get home. My wife drank lambics almost exclusively the whole time we were in Belgium.

If you can I strongly recommend hitting the town of Brugge and then spending a lot of time at ‘t Brugs Beertje. Actually Brugge itself is really cool!

Bamberg was an incredible town (home of Weyermann) with great smoked beers and kellerbier. In Munich I would hit Augustiner Brewery. Sit at one of the long tables, enjoy a pretzel or two and order some wonderful German food.

March is the Strong Beer Fest in Munich, so if you hit any of the breweries (Augustiner, Paulaner, etc) they will have wonderful doppelbocks on tap!

Let me know if you have any specific questions, Rob
